Welcome to Goodly Dale Cottage Homes
Situated mid-way between Windermere and Bowness within the beautiful Lake District National Park and World Heritage Centre, Goodly Dale Cottages are a development of 21 cottages set within grounds adjacent to the woodland of Sherrifs Walk. The grounds are dissected by the public footpath leading to the woods with the original, traditionally built Lakeland style cottages to the north and the more modern development to the south.
Designated as Almshouses the properties are provided to meet the needs of those qualifying for the opportunity to become a beneficiary of the Goodly Dale Cottage Homes Charity and the one and two bedroom properties are provided on extremely attractive terms.
The original 14 Almshouses were constructed by Pattinson’s in the early 1930’s to provide homes for those meeting strict qualifications in relation to their age, character, local origin or longevity of local residency.
Four further cottages were built in 1972 and a further development in 1975 saw the construction of two more cottages, a communal lounge and laundry facility and guest bedroom. A three bedroom Wardens bungalow was also constructed at this time.
The criteria for residency has changed little over the years with very similar occupancy qualifications to those established by the founding Trustees other than adaptation to reflect the changing needs of those seeking such accommodation.
Today the Homes are managed by board of seven voluntary Trustees drawn from the local community who continue to aspire to meet the needs of those who will benefit from the security and community provided by the charity.
The original cottages are often accidently discovered by tourists using the Sheriffs Walk footpath and over the years many photographs of the cottages must have found their way back to destinations across the world.
